Hijama — wet cupping therapy — is one of the oldest therapeutic practices in human history. Cups placed on the skin create gentle suction, drawing blood to the surface. In wet cupping, small superficial incisions allow stagnant blood to be drawn away, supporting the body's natural healing.
Practised across ancient Egyptian, Chinese, Greek and Islamic traditions, hijama holds particular reverence in prophetic medicine — recommended by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as one of the best treatments available.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
- "There is healing in hijama." - Sahih al-Bukhari
- "Healing is in three things: A gulp of honey, hijama, and branding with fire (cauterisation). But I forbid my followers to use (cauterisation) branding with fire." - Sahih al-Bukhari
- "The best medicines you may treat yourselves with are cupping and sea incense." - Sahih al-Bukhari
